My Top 10 Inspirational Travel Songs

Inspirational Travel Music

Somewhere at 30,000 feet above the sapphire blue Pacific Ocean it occurred to me to share my Top 10 Inspirational Travel Songs.  So here goes!

Music, Music, Music.  We can’t travel without it.  Music has been with me on my best and worst days.  Its been there in the best parties in Europe and Asia to the most beautiful days in Antarctica.  And of course the worst sea sick days in the ocean, the long bus rides and uncomfortable overnight flight layovers.  And those special moments you share with people along the way.

Avicii- Wake me up

This is probably my all-time favourite.  And accompanied by a powerfull music video.  Basically a girl is in a small town in USA and her little sister.  One morning she rides away on a horse, across the fields and finds a huge crazy music festival.  Opening up her mind to the world.   Apon return she tells her sister to “ pack your bags.  We are leaving!”  Sister- “Where are we going?”.  Girl “Somewhere we belong!”

I have taken this track with me to four corners of the globe.  From Alaska to Antarctica, Asia to Europe.

It inspires me to always seek new places I belong.

RIP Avicci….

Allan Walker-Faded

This isn’t really a travelling song but it is a catchy tune and it has accompanied my on many overnight bus rides, flights, its played in Hostels, Bars, clubs and hostels especially in Asia.

Tom Swoon-Ahead of us

“The best days are still ahead of us”

This line reminds me that no matter how privileged or tough your life my be it will always get better.  No matter the case I believe that looking forward to an even better future is only going to attract better things into your life.

So far this philosophy has worked for me and I hope it works for you too.  Positive thoughts will take you along way!

Chainsmokers (ft. Halsey) – Closer

“We aint ever getting older”

Not so may messages in this track, more memories for me.  “Closer” followed me around South East Asia last year.  It brings back memories of partying in the Thailand Island and one incredibly uncomfortable 15 hour overnight bus ride from Yangshuo to Guangzhou (China).   I overslept and ended up in Shenzen, the next city, 2 hours further past my destination!  It took me most of the day and lots of help from my Chinese friend on the end of the phone to get back to Guangzhou!

Avicii- The Nights

The video for this track by my favourite DJs is basically about someone doing as many crazy things as possible and living “…a life you will remember”.  It is an awesome theme song for anyone like me who is trying to live life it’s full.   One day I would like to make my own video to go with this track.  I’m still collecting video clips!

Kind of ironic now.  Avicci may have lived a short life but he lived “a life that will be remembered”  RIP.

Journey-Don’t Stop Believing

“Just a small town girl, living in a lonely world, took the midnight train going anywhere…”

The best adventures are when you don’t know the destination.  My best advice.  If in doubt, book the cheapest plane flight going “anywhere”

Believe in yourself!  And the best will come.

Lorde-Royals

“I see the veins of my city like they do from space”

Although not really a travelling song, this one line will always reverberate through my head whenever I take off from Auckland Airport on the start of a new adventure.  The best is at night when you can see the motor ways, the streets, the veins, of Auckland as the plane banks over the centre city.  Within a few minutes they fade into the blackness and you settle in for the journey ahead….

Eagles – Hotel California

A golden oldie.  I think it explains itself.  What a classic!  And a reminder to just go with the flow when you get into some of the more interesting situations with travelling. And to always have a way out…

Rachel Platten-Fight Song

Best line  “Like a small boat on the Ocean.”

This now familiar opening line of this track always accompanies me on the roughest days at sea.  On my last couple of trips with Heritage Expeditions in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica I would lie in my bunk on a rough night listening to this catchy song.  Now when I am feeling a bit sea sick it comes back to me to give some mental support!

Clean Bandit – No place I’d rather be

This track makes me think of the relationships I have had along my travels. Long and or short.  And how it is so important to cherish these moments.  In those moments “There is no place I’d rather be.”  It’s never easy saying good bye to someone special so make the most of every moment!

And because 10 Inspirational Travel Songs is never enough here is my number 11.  Last but not least…

Jay-Z – Young Forever

Don’t we wish we could be young for ever?  Well in some ways travelling keeps you young.  One of the guys I admire most is Australian adventurer Don McIntyre.  Now 61, he’s still out there doing as so many crazy cool projects and adventures.  Exactly the same as when he was 25.  One of his next goal is to sail solo unassisted around the world in the 2022 Golden Globe Race.  Young at heart…what an inspirational guy!
